Diversity in the Workplace

Workplace diversity refers to the variety of differences between people in an organization.

That sounds simple, but diversity encompasses race, gender, ethnic group, age, personality, cognitive style, tenure, organizational function, education, background and more.

Diversity not only involves how people perceive themselves, but how they perceive others. Those perceptions affect their interactions. For a wide assortment of employees to function effectively as an organization, human resource professionals need to deal effectively with issues such as

communication, adaptability and change.

Diversity will increase significantly in the coming years. Successful organizations recognize the need for immediate action and are ready and willing to spend resources on managing diversity in the workplace now.

Common Pitfalls
Cultural Miscommunication
Resolving cultural misunderstandings can clear the air, or even lead to laughter. Sometimes, though, when it comes to race, unidentified cultural misunderstandings can also lead to festering resentments.

Promoting Diversity

Although on paper workplace diversity may seem like a good idea, many companies experience challenges when attempting to implement changes. Employers must develop strategies for implementation, analyze results and make necessary changes if results do not meet the established goals.

The implementation process may present challenges to everyone involved, and frustrations may arise because implementation is not as smooth as expected. To help with implementation, employers may decide to hire experienced professionals who specialize in workplace diversity. Experienced professionals understand the challenges and know how to handle them.

Mediating Disputes

Conflict happens. It happens in all areas of business. When your employees spend 40 plus hours together each week, they are bound to run into disagreements and arguments that can hurt not only their productivity but the productivity of their fellow co-workers.

When such issues are not settled, bad things can happen. Good people quit. Profitable relationships dissolve. Great companies go under. Clearly, too much unresolved conflict is hazardous to the health of your organization.

How do you deal with conflicts between your employees? Do you pray that the situation works itself out without any lasting consequences? Or do you come in with an iron fist doing what you think is right, but not paying attention to the needs of your disagreeing employees? Actually, both approaches are wrong. In a world where relationships matter more than ever, mediation skills matter more than ever.

So whether you manage employees or clients or both, it’s critical to learn the art of bringing harmony out of conflict.

Challenging Perceptions

More often than not our perceptions are intuitive. However, they aren’t always accurate, especially the perceptions we have of ourselves. How often do we challenge our initial responses to see if our assumptions are correct to begin with?

Similarly, the way we think others perceive us can be inaccurate too. This can have an impact on how authentic we are and how we respond to those people. The key to challenging our assumptions is by being insatiably curious; by pinpointing what informs our perceptions and whether our beliefs are helping our hindering us.

If incorrect, the way we perceive our own abilities and certain relationships we have, can be detrimental to us. Those perceptions can create obstacles around us and prevent us from working effectively.

This one-day programme aims to help you gain insight around your perceptions by identifying your values and beliefs, building on and adding to your existing strengths and developing professional and personal confidence in order that you can be truly authentic and effective.
